1] There was a time when Freedom of Speech did not apply to everyone, not did it apply everywhere. Does Freedom of Speech apply to everyone today?
No, it doesn't. In Canada it generally does, although to an extent. That extent, however is understandable - No racism or other such things. It's fine to not allow people to act in those ways. However, outside of Canada freedom of speech doesn't really exist. Even in the United States, where all is "free". Peaceful protests are commonly shut down and heaven forbid you say anything about the government or God. In other countries around the world, you get killed for you opinions. Freedom of Speech does NOT apply to everyone today.
2] Mr Thompson (Denzel Washington) gives his students the opportunity to debate on his terms. Does he prepare them to stand on their own?
I do not think that Mr Thompson taught his students how to debate by themselves. They may have researched the topics, but they never really gave their own debate arguments. They were all made by the teacher - giving them example to work with would have been great...as outlines, guidelines. He did too much, and they're very lucky they managed to pull through by themselves. I think they were prepared, but not because of what he did.

You make some excellent points in both your answers.
Here is how to improve them:
Avoid "I" statements. (I do not think that)
Avoid contradictory statements:
"No, it doesn't. In Canada it generally does.."
"In Canada it generally does, although to an extent."
This causes a jarring impact in your argument.
Avoid unclear statements (syntax):
"That extent, however is understandable - No racism or other such things." It's fine to not allow people to act in those ways."
racism is not an extent.
This can be reworded to say: When opinions are based on faulty assumptions whose sole purpose is to demean or victimize another, then those opinions must be denounced for what they are - racist, sexist or any other "ist" statements.
"It's fine to not allow people to act in those ways."
It's fine not to allow some people freedom of speech if it does not concur with our own? Read the above suggestion.
